"The Name of the Lord in the Old Testament" Outline
Exodus 3:13-15
I. What Is His Name?
1. “The LORD” translates the name Yahweh
(Genesis 4:26, Jeremiah 33:2)
2. Jews would instead say "the Lord", "the Name", or "Jehovah" in order to avoid taking his name in vain
(Exodus 20:7, Leviticus 22:31, 24:15-17)
II. What His Name Means
1. God is eternal
(Exodus 3:13-14, Jeremiah 33:2, Amos 5:8, 9:6, Psalm 135:13, Micah 4:5, Exodus 15:18, Isaiah 41:4, 42:5-8, 43:10-12, 44:6)
2. God is reliable
(Exodus 3:15, Malachi 3:6)
III. What His Name Means for Us
1. We should know his name (Psalm 148:1)
2. We should trust him (Proverbs 3:5)
3. We should obey him
4. We should not misuse his name (Matthew 12:36-37, 2 Timothy 2:16)
