The Faithful and Wise Steward
“Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.” (Luke 12:48) In the context of this verse, Jesus is talking about stewards being held accountable for those things that have been entrusted to them. He emphasizes that they must be both faithful and wise in their managing and that they have a responsibility to both know and do the master’s will. This Jesus gives in answer to Peter’s question about whether Jesus’ previous parable concerning stewardship applied to the apostles or all people. Apparently, Jesus’ answer is a resounding “yes!” It applies to anyone that is a steward, whether apostle or otherwise. While stewardship may initially be a passive concept, in that things are given to us, the fidelity and prudence that are expected necessitate diligent action in our response. This should give us all pause to consider if we are being the faithful and wise steward that Jesus describes.
