Faith is More Than a Feeling
"It just feels right." "I just don't feel forgiven." "I just feel so close to God!" And the list could continue. We live in a very feeling-driven society. In a country that professes man's inherent entitlement to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness we can see how people have taken that to mean "the right to live my life in whatever way grants me pleasant feelings." Is this godly? Is this spiritual? No, quite frankly this is the kind of mindset James probably would have referred to as "earthly, unspiritual, demonic." Are feelings bad? Again, no, as feelings are a part of humanity and God determined man to be good during creation. But are we to be led by our feelings? Should how we feel determine our course of action? Should our feelings guide us, or do they have a more subjective role to play? (Pun intended) And what of our faith? If our trust in God is more than just a feeling, then from what objective source do we derive such faith?
