Put Away the Foreign Gods
“Put away the foreign gods that are among you and purify yourselves and change your garments.” (Genesis 35:2) These were Jacob’s words to his family as they set off towards Bethel several thousand years ago, but what about today? How would we respond if someone told us to put away our idols and purify ourselves? When was the last time you bowed down to a piece of wood? Is the definition of an idol simply a carved image that we keep with us at all times, or is the sin of idolatry more involved than that?
